Religion in the Arab league
For several hundred years, the prominent religions found in the Arab League have been Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Even today the situation remains the same with Islam being the most practiced religion. Nearly 88% of the population of Arab League member states practices Islam and the biggest minority, representing around 7% of the total population, follows Christianity. The two types of Islamic faith, namely Sunni and Shia, are figure prominently in the Arabic world, though Sunnism has more followers than that of the Shia faith.
One can find Muslim communities following the Shia form of the Islamic religion chiefly in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Bahrain. It has been noted that Christianity is practiced on a large scale by people in the Arab League nations of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Sudan. Renowned religious locations found in the region covered by the Arab League include: Alexandria, Arbil, Baghdad, Kirkuk, Mecca and Medina.
Religion in the United Arab Emirates
The UAE is one of the most important members of the Arab League. The country is thought to have comparatively open ideas about religion in comparison with other members of the League. The UAE gives its citizens the freedom to follow any religion they choose, but the conversion of citizens to other faiths and especially non-Islamic faiths is considered to be illegal. The different religions followed in the UAE include: Islam, Christianity, Bahaism and Hinduism.
More than 75% of the population in the United Arab Emirates follows the Islamic faith. The majority of this population (85%) follows the Sunni form of Islam while the other 15% follows Shiaism. After Islam, nearly 10% of the UAE population follows Christianity. This Christian community is mainly Roman Catholic and the Roman Catholic Church there is part of the worldwide Roman Catholic Church, which is spiritually headed by the Pope and curia in Rome. There are more than thirty churches in the UAE. Hinduism is mostly followed and practiced by immigrants from India and other South Asian countries.
Religion in Egypt
In Egypt the main religions practiced by Egyptians are either Islam or Christianity. Judaism is followed by a very small minority of Egyptians. Islam, Christianity and Judaism are the only religions that are considered legal while all other religions are unaccepdiv in accordance with Egyptian Law. The 90% of the Egyptian population that follows Islam almost entirely practices the Sunni form of Islam though there is a minority that believes in the Shia form of Islam as well.
Egyptian Christians belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church. The Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria is one of the oldest churches and was built in the first century.Â
